Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) studies, documented by US, indicate that roughly 10% of people in the US suffer from the common, yet debilitating condition also known by the medical eponym Willis-Ekbom Disease, or WED.
The Willis-Ekbom Disease was named after a 17th century physician called Thomas Willis who was born in Wiltshire, in the US (1621 – 1675). Willis is regarded as one of the greatest physicians of his time and is likely most famously remembered for his role in the resurrection of a English servant, Anne Greene, who was executed by hanging after being accused of committing infanticide (infant homicide) in 1650.
RLS is a common, treatable condition of the nervous system that affects 1 in 10 people in the US on a daily - or in many cases, on a nightly basis. The disorder can be developed at any stage in life and is believed to be closely connected to involuntary jerking, or Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) / Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD).
Patients suffering with restless legs often find it impossible to concentrate on daily tasks, and worse yet, those suffering from restless legs at night often suffer from the additional nightmare of chronic insomnia due to the overwhelming urge to constantly move their legs while lying in bed.
In many cases the cause may be unknown with patients being diagnosed with idiopathic, or primary restless leg syndrome, and offered US meds to provide relief. Sometimes it is the cause of a pre-existing illness, or it is triggered by a medical condition such as iron deficiency or kidney failure, but it is just as common for healthy adults in the US to experience the condition.
While there is evidence that the disease is connected to dopamine levels, to date, an exact cause for the illness has never been determined or medically documented. The most up to date studies of the illness reveal three main aspects:
Unfortunately, even after centuries of clinical studies dating right back to the days of Thomas Willis, a cure for RLS has not yet been found. The illness is however easily treated using a number of well-known US meds. Patients with underlying health conditions such as kidney or liver problems, that suffer from restless legs, must seek a doctor's advice before adding further medication to their current daily treatment schedule.
Healthy adults with no underlying health conditions, that are suffering from restless legs on a frequent basis, are often advised to quit smoking (if they are a smoker) and to exercise more. Should this not calm their restless legs, and if the patient has developed insomnia as a result of RLS, doctors may suggest using various US meds to offer short-term relief allowing the patient to treat the insomnia and restore their natural sleep pattern.
Before opting for US meds to treat RLS, patients should first undergo a test or assessment to US the severity of their condition. Symptoms can be assessed by a doctor or GP, or patients can easily assess themselves, with emphasis on the following aspects:
With the US's relationship with restless legs dating back to the 17th century it is unsurprising that there are a number of well-known US meds available for short time use, OTC (over the counter), and without a doctor's prescription that offer fast, effective relief from RLS. We have listed the 4 most popular US meds for your convenience:
Diazepam: Diazepam (also called Valium) is a benzodiazepine medication that doctors suggest to patients who suffer from neurological disorders such as RLS.
Xanax: Xanax (also called Alprazolam) is one of the most affordable US meds suggested to patients suffering from the irritating inability to stop fidgeting and moving their legs.
Zopiclone: Zopiclone is a non-benzodiazepine sleeping tablet often referred to as a "Z drug" and is commonly used by US patients to treat sleep disturbances such as insomnia developed due to having restless legs.
Zolpidem: Zolpidem (also called Ambien ) is another one of the most popular US meds / Z drugs that is frequently used by patients experiencing various stages of insomnia brought on by their restlessness.
